The Rt Revd David Walker, Bishop of Manchester, will preach at the combined Festival Service and Inaugural Service for the incoming Chairman of Saddleworth Parish Council.
David Walker was born and grew up in Saddleworth.After attending Manchester Grammar School and King's College, Cambridge he was ordained deacon in 1983 serving his curacy in Handsworth, Sheffield until 1986. He held posts as Team Vicar of Maltby and Vicar of Bramfield and Ravenfield before becoming Suffragan Bishop of Dudley in 2000. He was appointed Bishop of Manchester on October 7, 2013.
An experienced and highly regarded spiritual leader, Bishop David is passionate about issues which affect social housing, asylum seekers and the benefit cuts. He chairs the Church of England Council working with Religious Monastic Communities, is a trustee of the Church Urban Fund, a member of the Church of England Ministry Council and a Church Commissioner. He also chairs the Independent Ethics Committee for Greater Manchester Police. In his spare time he is a keen hill walker and is married to Sue. They have two children.
